Silent Spring water tests reveal contamination Print E-mail

HYANNIS — A study released this week by a Newton breast cancer research foundation found traces of pharmaceuticals, personal care products and flame retardants, among other chemicals, in a majority of wells tested across Cape Cod.

But the contaminants were detected in low concentrations, and researchers have not yet identified any detrimental health effects, said Silent Spring Institute environmental researcher Dr. Laurel Schaider, who led the study.

"Keep drinking your tap water," she said, presenting the findings yesterday at Barnstable Town Hall. "At this point, the health risks of exposure to this level of chemicals ... really is not well understood."

Scientists from the institute have spent the last six months analyzing water samples from public wells across the Cape, reports the Cape Cod Times.
